Everyone that was at our Stirling Sitting and AGM on the weekend of 21st and 22nd June will agree that it was an event to remember! MSYPs stood firm against the Government's proposals to raise the age of alcohol purchase to 21, decided that our flagship campaigns for the year ahead will be Poverty and Homelessness and Support for young people with additional needs. We played games, danced and ran with a big elastic band round our waists as the heavens open above at SYP in the Park. The SYP took our engagement with decision-makers to a new level this weekend as we held a full two-day National Sitting, together with a Friday night reception in the Scottish Parliament itself!
The weekend saw MSYPs rise to the occasion and produce two high-quality debates in the Parliament chamber, grill high-profile MSPs, raise their voices on the scandal of child poverty in Scotland, as well as continuing good work in subject committees, workshops and training. The Parliamentary reception, another first for the SYP, saw several deserving MSYPs, support workers and committees recognised for their exceptional work for young people in Scotland at the third edition of the SYP Awards.
It was an early start to the weekend as members from all corners of Scotland travelled to Parliament on Friday 29th February for our reception. Despite being at a time of the week when most MSPs are racing back to their constituencies to spend the weekend with their families, politicians from all parties stayed at Holyrood to greet and welcome MSYPs, and discuss issues relevant to young people in an informal way. This genuine interest in what the SYP had to say was not lost on MSYPs who seized the opportunity to network and question the representatives from the ‘Big Parly’.

MSYPs from Shetland to Hawick gathered together in the Erskine Bridge Hotel in Renfrewshire for the latest SYP National Sitting on the weekend of the 17th and 18th November. Continuing the successful idea of themed Sittings, our November meeting focussed on ‘Crime and Communities’, with members discussing specific problems in their local areas, and attempting to find creative youth-focussed solutions.
Throw in addresses from politicians and senior police officers, plenty of subject committee action, interactive training sessions, some funky 60’s and seventies themed evening entertainment as well as a spectacular fireworks display, and it made for a busy, productive and successful weekend, with young people right at the heart of it!

At the end of November MSYPs Kay McMahon, Claire Ewing, Christopher Burns and Steven McKenzie flew to Norway for a week, along with 10 young people from Fife Youth Forum. They visited the town of Porsgrunn and researched youth participation, as Porsgrunn is noted for its active and vibrant youth activism. Over the last 15 years the Town Council has encouraged youth participation in all aspects of everyday life. Three of the Town Council were under the age of 19 when they were elected and the young people of Porsgrunn are more likely to be involved of a variety of local groups and youth forums than the rest of Norway.

It took an all-day coach journey and a rough ferry crossing to get there, but the SYP’s first ever Sitting in Orkney was well worth the wait! In the largest gathering of MSYPs, guests, staff and support workers ever with over 170 in attendance, participants were treated to debates, votes, workshops, training, subject committee time, presentations, dances, a talent show and even a game of ‘energy bingo’. MSYPs worked hard and had lots of fun, coming away with a clear message to spread and campaign on in their local communities.
The SYP is currently recruiting for a Development Officer (Networks & Training) to add to our staff team.
