Next Sitting: March 2010 (Coatbridge)
We are delighted to be able to inform you with the details of the next SYP Sitting which will be kindly hosted by North Lanarkshire Council on the 6th and 7th March at St. Andrew’s High School in Coatbridge. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s also one of Scotland’s most modern community centres and it’s going to be a fantastic setting for a great weekend of SYP action! Click here for travel and accomodation information.
Discussions and Debates
The theme of the Sitting is ‘Young People and Money’ and much we’ll be focussing on how the recession is affecting young people. You can view the full agenda online by clicking here but some of the highlights include discussions on opportunities and careers advice, wages and rights in the workplace, and student poverty and debt. For all the info you need to know about the debates and discussions, click here.
There will be no less than four Members Motions for MSYPs to debate on the Sunday. These look at Mosquito devices, political education in schools, young carers and exam leave for prelims. These motions may well become petitions to the Scottish Parliament, so the decisions you make can really make a difference to young Scots. So make sure you have a think and consult young people in your constituency about all these hot topics! For more info about the Members Motion topics, click here.
Company Business
Also on the Sunday, we’ll be presenting some proposed changes to the SYP’s governing documents, relating to the appointment of Board members. These changes are
outlined here, but if you’re not a legal eagle don’t worry, there will be a full presentation on the day to explain it all! Click here to view the company calling notice .
SYP Awards 2010
This year we will also be hosting our fabulous SYP Awards in Coatbridge, with six prestigious awards to be won. Is there an MSYP that has gone the extra mile for the organisation, or done some great work in their local area that you think deserves recognition for it? Is your support worker the bee’s knees? If you think someone deserves to be recognised, we’re looking for your nominations! Click here for more info on categories and voting – please note the closing date is Friday 19th February, so get voting now!
Let us know you’re coming!
We hope you’re as excited as we are about the March Sitting, so make sure you book your place as soon as possible! Get in touch with your support worker to register by Friday 19th February at the very latest to tell them you’re coming. Keep your eye on your email next week for details of the workshops, as we’ll ask you to choose which one you’d like to go to.
We look forward to seeing you all again in Coatbridge! If you have any questions about the March Sitting please get in touch with Kate Bouchier-Hayes on 0131 313 2488 or kate.b@scottishyouthparliament.org.uk
