Workshop Information

On the Saturday afternoon of the September Sitting, we'll be running a series of topical interactive workshops related to 'Young People and Money'. They'll all be interesting and great fun, but you can only go to one, so make sure you get yourself signed up for your favourite!

When you're registering to come to the Sitting, tell your support worker what your 1st and 2nd choices of workshop are. Workshop choices will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so get your choices to your support worker ASAP!

Please note: It will NOT be possible to change workshops on the day so make sure you get your workshop choices to your support worker ASAP to avoid disappointment. MSYPs who do not submit their choices will be put into a random workshop - so don't miss out!

Workshop A - Independent living?

Quarriers logo Independence comes at a price, what's the cost to you? Could you live on £48 a week? Is the benefits system keeping young people in poverty and holding young people back? Think it should be change? Let’s see what we can do to help improve the situation for young people being kept in poverty and from moving on to positive futures.

Workshop B - Citizens Advice Scotland

Citizens Advice Bureau logo The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) service in Scotland helps people with over a million different issues a year, ranging from credit card debt to housing problems; from discrimination at work to problems claiming benefits. This interactive workshop aims to empower young people to take control of problems that the recession is causing this age group. The workshop also offers the chance to act as a young person researcher in an exciting national project looking at the impact of the recession on young people in Scotland, including taking part in a short film to promote the project.

Workshop C - Beyond the Minimum: Campaign for a Living Wage

Poverty Alliance logo Despite the introduction of the National Minimum Wage there has been an increase in the numbers of working households living in poverty. This session will look for your ideas on how to get employers to pay a wage that allows for a minimum standard of living. You can also learn how to get your own campaign up and running!

Workshop D - Young Scot

Young Scot logo Have you ever heard of a credit union? Should young people be able to run their own credit union? What makes a credit union different from a bank? Come along to find out more and do your bit to help Young Scot to help young people deal with money.

Workshop E - CashBack for Communities

CashBack logo Over the past two years the CashBack for Communities Fund Local Youth Events and Activities Grants Scheme has provided over 500 youth work organisations across Scotland with awards totalling £4m. In each of the 32 local authority areas young people participate in assessment panels, by scoring applications and making decisions on awards. This IT-active session will introduce you to the highly innovative Bid Assessment Tool (BAT) which young people use to assess CashBack applications and hopefully interest you in becoming an assessor for your area. Who knows, you may even make an application to the CashBack for Communities Fund for your own organisation once you have the information, knowledge and skill?

Workshop F - YouthBank Scotland

YouthBank logo Grant making sounds like something old men and women in suits do that is unapproachable or inaccessible for young people. Well it need not be! YouthBank is youth led grant making where YOUNG PEOPLE work with local networks and partnerships to establish their own grant pot. YOU design the application process, how to make fair decisions and YOU give away the money to other YOUNG PEOPLE who have good ideas which benefit YOUR community. YOU control the process and inspire others to challenge the issues they see in their communities. The workshop will look at how you could join in and benefit from established YouthBanks and how you can set up your own. Interested? See YOU at the workshop!
