Brian leads the way!

picture the change With 11 weeks to go until the end of the Picture the Change consultation, current ‘MSYP of the Year’ Brian Borland is living up to his title, leading our individual MSYP consultation returns with 65 responses. By teaming up with local youth venues to ensure as much access as possible to young people in his constituency, Brian has already reached his MSYP commitment to secure 50 responses and we’re sure he won’t slow up!

So far, Picture the Change has had some pretty good media coverage, links are popping up everywhere and we’re gathering lots of responses, but we need you to keep up the momentum - there’re shoes at stake, for goodness sake!

If you haven’t already started your consultation or made your plans for how you’re going to do it, you need to get a move on – there’re loads of resources to help at http://www.picturethechange.org/ (including ways for you to promote the online consultation on your social networking sites), but if you’re still short on ideas, drop us an email at manifesto@syp.org.uk and we’ll see what we can do to help…

Picture the Change – Idea of the Week

More people means more responses, right? Why not follow Brian’s lead and find out where large numbers of young people are near you and head along to do some consultation? You can use http://www.youngscotwow.org/ to find out about local activities.

Everyone needs the ClickCEOP app in their life...

Facebook Repeated friend requests from someone you don’t know? Upsetting comments from so-called friends? Downloaded a virus by accident? Embarrassing pics posted online?

We all know someone that these things have happened to.

Well, from here on, if you are worried about anything online, you can get access to help, advice and support direct from your Facebook profile – all you have to do is add and bookmark the app – show your friends (and anyone pretending to be your friend online!) that you are hooked up to ClickCEOP.

The app links directly to the police organisation dedicated to keeping young people safe online so if you run into trouble online – this is the place to go where there are people that can help.

Too add the CEOP button check out www.facebook.com/ClickCEOP.

No Knives, Better Lives

no knives, better lives supporter No knives, Better Lives was launched in June 2009 to get the word out about the dangers of carrying a knife. It brought together several groups of young people who were already making a stand against knife crime in their area. Today the campaign can be seen in posters, cinema adverts, online films and chalk stencils.

Incorporating youth diversionary activity, community engagement, social advertising and a structured programme in schools, No Knives, Better Lives is a multi-pronged campaign which aims to educate young people about the dangers of carrying a knife and the devastating personal consequences it can have on their future, as well as on their family and friends.

SYP are supporting the campaign, and will shortly be launching a project with the No Knives team which will see young people create their own 2 minute film against knife crime. We’ll be keeping you posted on how the project develops and how you too can take part over the coming months.

ASH Scotland wants to hear from you!

ASH logo In Scotland, over 13,000 people die every year from tobacco use. It is estimated that 15,000 young people (age 13 – 24) in Scotland start smoking each year. ASH Scotland are the leading Charity that campaign for better control and reduction of tobacco use in Scotland. They are planning a new campaign for a new tobacco control strategy in Scotland for the next five years. And they want to hear your views!

The board received training on the governance of SYP; how to develop strategic plans; Child protection issues; Board Meeting training; Team building and team work, not to mention spending some time with Ann getting up to speed on where we are with our 3 year strategic plan.
