Vice Chair Update
Before I begin my January edition of the Vice Chair Update, I want to take the opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very happy New Year! Whether you celebrated with friends and family, danced the night away at a Ceilidh, or simply stayed inside and watched the celebrations from the comfort of the sofa, I hope Hogmanay was enjoyable and a great celebration to begin 2016.
This year looks to be jam packed, and as a parliament we have so many opportunities to ensure the young people we represent have their voices heard. With the Scottish Parliament elections just round the corner, it is great to see so many MSYPs helping with the final push for manifesto consultations. Lead the Way is the voice-box through which we truly represent all young people in Scotland. Each ‘tick’ on the consultation response gives us a stronger mandate to lobby decision makers on behalf of all young people.
Just this morning I read Rachel Bolton MSYPs blog for Scripture Union, on which she described SYP as being the platform in which everyone has the “opportunity to bring change and be change”. For me that really summed up what our work is about: we engage with and advocate for the issues that effect young people, in some way, every day. Whether it's issues of equality or concerns over education, young people have the opportunity to speak and be heard by our Parliament. Our national manifesto consultation is the document that, for the next five years, will guide us in this work – so lets make sure the voices it contains, and its message are even more powerful. Make sure you get all your consultations completed, get them sent into the SYP office, and let's Lead The Way to 2021 with the strength of young voices alongside us.
For 2016, my SYP New Years Resolution is to ensure that now, more than ever, my work champions the voices of Scotland's young people. What is yours?
Katie Burke MSYP
North East Fife Constituency
